Matrix Plan

Fixed width, fixed depth, forced spillover.

Overview

A matrix (or forced matrix) plan limits how many people can sit on each level of your organisation. A 3×7 matrix means three positions on your frontline and seven levels deep: 3 + 9 + 27 + … = 3,279 positions. Once your frontline is full, anyone you enrol spills over into the next available position below you, filling the matrix from the top down.

Because the structure is fixed, every member knows exactly how big a full matrix is and what it pays. Matrix plans are popular for low-ticket digital products, memberships and 'done-for-you' programs where the pitch is 'we fill your matrix together'. Common sizes are 2×2, 3×3, 4×7, 5×7 and 2×12.

DIRSL supports any width and depth, cycling (completing a matrix and re-entering a new one), matching bonuses and position purchases, with auto-placement rules that keep matrices balanced.

How it works

Mechanics, tile by tile.

Step 1

Pick a matrix size

Width × depth, for example 3×7. This defines the maximum organisation size and total payout per full matrix.

Step 2

Fill the frontline

Your first 3 enrolments take your frontline positions.

Step 3

Spillover fills downward

Your 4th enrolment goes to the first open spot on level 2 (left-to-right or balanced), building your team's frontlines for them.

Step 4

Earn per level

Each level pays a fixed amount or % per filled position, for example $2 per member on levels 1–3 and $1 on levels 4–7.

Step 5

Complete and cycle

When a matrix fills, a completion bonus is paid and the member can re-enter at the bottom of the sponsor's matrix (cycling), restarting the earnings.

The maths

A worked example.

Worked example

A 3×5 matrix, 60% filled, $20 membership

  • Matrix 3×5 = 363 positions; 218 filled
  • Monthly membership $20 (10 BV)
  • Pay per position: L1 $3, L2 $2, L3 $1, L4 $0.50, L5 $0.25
  • Filled: L1 3, L2 9, L3 27, L4 81, L5 98
  • Matching bonus 10% on 3 frontline earnings ($400 combined)

A fully filled 3×5 at these rates pays $9 + $18 + $27 + $40.50 + $60.75 = $155.25 per month before matching bonuses.

Honest view

Strengths and watch-outs.

Strengths

  • Fixed size makes income ceilings easy to explain
  • Spillover motivates new members
  • Great for low-ticket, high-volume memberships
  • Forced balance keeps the organisation symmetrical
  • Cycling creates renewable income events

Watch-outs

  • Members can earn from spillover without selling, which regulators dislike
  • Small matrices cap top-leader income
  • Placement disputes if rules are unclear
  • Long tail levels pay little

FAQ

Questions about this plan.

Narrow and deep (2×12, 3×9) rewards depth and spillover; wide and shallow (5×5) rewards personal sponsoring. Low-ticket products usually choose narrow-deep.

Yes, DIRSL supports multiple positions per member, each tracked separately in the matrix and in the wallet.

By rule: first available left-to-right, balanced (fill the emptiest branch), or sponsor-preferred. The rule is set per company.

When a matrix completes, the member is paid a completion bonus and re-enters as a new position at the bottom of their sponsor's matrix, starting over.

Yes. Matrix + unilevel sponsor bonus or matrix + auto-pool are common hybrids.

Matrix is legal where income is tied to a genuine product. Pure position-selling with no product is treated as a pyramid scheme.
