Stair-Step Breakaway
Climb the steps. Break away. Earn overrides.
The stair-step breakaway is the oldest major compensation plan and still powers many of the largest direct-selling companies. Distributors climb a ladder of ranks ('steps') by hitting personal and group volume targets, and each step pays a higher percentage on their group's volume. When a distributor in your group reaches a leadership rank, they break away: their group is no longer part of your personal group, and instead you earn an override (a smaller percentage) on the entire breakaway group's volume.
The journey, step by step.
Buy at a discount, sell at retail
Each step raises your discount (for example 20% → 25% → 30% → 35%).
Climb steps on group volume
Monthly personal + group volume moves you up; the difference between your discount and your downline's discount is your step income.
Reach breakaway rank
At the top step (e.g. Director), you become a breakaway leader with your own group.
Upline earns overrides
Your former upline now earns a % of your whole group's volume (1st generation override), and their upline a smaller % (2nd generation).
Maintain and requalify
Leaders must maintain volume monthly or risk losing rank and having their group roll back up.
Why companies choose it.
This structure rewards two behaviours: retailing (the step percentages) and building leaders (the breakaway overrides). It is well suited to companies with established product lines, retail-heavy models and long distributor lifecycles.
DIRSL models steps, breakaways, override generations, maintenance and re-qualification rules, and keeps a monthly snapshot so historical commission statements never change.
A Director with two breakaway groups
- Personal group volume: 12,000 BV at 35% step discount; downline average discount 25% → net 10%
- Breakaway group A: 60,000 BV, 1st-generation override 5%
- Breakaway group B: 35,000 BV, 1st-generation override 5%
- A 2nd-generation group under A: 40,000 BV at 3%
- Monthly rank maintenance met
| Bonus | Trigger | Typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step discount / retail profit | Personal and group sales | 20–40% discount ladder | Difference paid as commission |
| Group volume bonus | Monthly GV targets | 3–10% | Before breakaway |
| Breakaway override | Leader groups | 2–6%, 2–6 generations | Core leader income |
| Rank bonus | New step achieved | $100–$5,000 | One-time |
| Leadership pool | Top ranks | 1–3% of company BV | Share-based |

Questions about this plan.
When your downline leader breaks away, their volume leaves your group total but you start earning an override on their entire group. Net income usually rises.
Typically 2–6, decreasing by generation. Configurable per rank in DIRSL.
If a breakaway leader fails maintenance, their group temporarily rolls back into the upline's personal group for that month.
It emphasises retail sales and leadership development, which regulators and experienced distributors both favour.
Yes. Many modern variants collapse the steps into 3 ranks and keep only the breakaway overrides.
Yes. Every monthly run is frozen; rank or structure changes later never alter past statements.
